Description
The Eminent Scholars Archive is an expanding archive developed by Lesley Dingle and Daniel Bates, joined in 2023 by John Magyar, in which we document the careers and achievements of eminent scholars associated with the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge. The archive includes biographies, bibliographies, photographs, recorded interviews and many other resources. Since 2022 the development of the Archive has been overseen by the Faculty of Law’s Eminent Scholars Archive Steering Group. Second Conversation with Professor Gerald Postema | Professor Gerald Postema was the Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science for 2013-2014. He was interviewed initially in January 2014 in the Squire Law Library, while the present interview was held on June 30th 2014. Professor Postema looks back favourably over his teaching activities while in the Goodhart Chair. He also speaks of his researches into the papers of Sir Matthew Hale, on which he bases part of his Boutwood Lecture at Corpus Christi college. In particular, he elaborates on Hale’s interesting concept of Potestas Irritans, and how his research on Hale led him to the works of the 17th century Spanish legal philosopher Francisco Suárez. Professor Postema also gives some details of new insights into his long standing research into the writings and ideas of Jeremy Bentham. 'Greece: A State With Weak Institutions, in Crisis': Professor Spyridon Flogaitis | On Thursday 31st October 2013, Professor Spyridon Flogaitis of the University of Athens spoke at an event held at Wolfson College in association with the Wolfson Law Society. Professor Flogaitis has a Degree in Law (Hon), from the Athens University (1973), a Docteur en Droit (Summa cum laude) from the University of Paris II (Pantheon-Assas) (1978), a Docteur en Histoire (Summa cum laude) from the University of Paris I (Pantehon-Sorbonne), and a Diplome de l’Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, IVeme Sction–Histoire et Philologie. He is Doctor honoris causa, at the National School of Political Science and Public Administration, Bucarest and at the Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon. Professor Flogaitis is also a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (French Republic), and Cavalliere del’Ordine di Merito (Italian Republic). He is currently a Professor of Administrative Law at the University of Athens; Director of the European Public Law Organization (Greece); Attorney at Law at the High Court and the Council of State (Greece); and member of the Appeals Board of the European Space Agency.
