- The Basics
Nineteen seventy-four was the year when cultural happenings became hugely popular novelty songs. Pacifism found an anthem in the antiwar "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods; exhibitionism was celebrated by Ray Stevens on "The Streak"; and the global obsession with Bruce Lee (he died in '73) found its tune in "Kung Fu Fighting."

A couple of promising newcomers made their mark in '74. Swedish group ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo" and proceeded to conquer the pop-music world with a perfect combination of astute songwriting and Scandinavian sexiness. And straight out of Hicksville, New York, came former boxer Billy Joel with "Piano Man."

Collector's items in the '74 time capsule include the cult instrumental "Tubular Bells (Opening Theme)" by Mike Oldfield, which was used to stunning effect in director William Friedkin's horror classic, The Exorcist, and the Spanish language "Eres Tu" by Mocedades, a group formed in the Basque country of northern Spain.

Despite the outward appearance of turmoil — the energy crisis, the kidnapping of Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army, Nixon's resignation, the Super Outbreak of devastating tornadoes — 1974 was a pretty fun year, dominated by lighthearted pop and the occasional rock classic ("Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd; "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Relive the sounds (and celebrate the birth of Ryan Seacrest) with our vintage '74 playlist.

Variety
The thing about the 70s is the stunning variety of music that was made back then. Looks didn't matter just the sound. Today's music all blends in together and you can't distiguish one song from another. Get back to basics when music was still made by musicians and not models.
to each his own
Incredible that some people write on here what songs are crummy. Its your own personal taste!! All of these songs were hits so ALOT of people must have liked them. Everyone thinks their taste in music is the best ! Get a life!!
Everyone's Tastes are Different
This is a wonderful compilation of the variety and diversity of music in 1974. I have read some of the reviews that belittle some of the songs and talent of the era, but keep in mind, that it isn't just YOUR opinion that matters. I graduated from high school in 1974, and although some of these songs were fast-forwarded, I knew a lot of "chicks" that loved them. So relax, grab a 12 box of your favorite brew, and go for a "booze-cruise" down your favorite old country road. You'll learn to love the MELLOW 70'S.
