A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

2001 A Space Odyssey
Firstly, BUY THIS MOVIE! There's nothing missing any more. I bought my copy a couple of weeks ago. The problem's fixed. I saw this movie for the first time in a large dark theater by myself, when it was released in 1968. I was 10 years old at that time and a powerful impression was made on me that has lasted through today. Watching the movie many times since, I simply never grow tired of it. The movie was very well thought out, as given it was four years in the making. Watching it requires patience, but is well worth devoting the time. Also, the story is complete in itself, and I have therefore found watching the sequel "2010" was a waste of time. This movie is highly thought-provoking since it addresses mankinds most important concerns about his own existence. There are no movies to compare to this one!
You don't know what cinema is, if you didn't seen it. Greatest movie about space. And it's really psychedelic. (Sorry for wrong english - I'm from Russia)
Masterpiece of a movie
"2001" is arguably the greatest film ever made. It's definitely among the greatest movies ever. Watching it I noticed how much of it has been copied by nearly every science-fiction movie that followed it. Its setting, the special effects, its style and overall look, the picture it draws of the future - it's all timeless. So is the photography and the use of music. Both groundbraking. The makers were so clever to avoid many mistakes later directors made (like having sound in space etc.). This movie is really flawless in any aspect. Great acting, too.
Unfortunately the transfer of this movie is in no way what it should be. The encoding is absolutely poor. Whenever you see dark space in this film (and as you can imagine this happens once in a while ;-)) the picture becomes awfully bad. This one needs a HD transfer from a good master, maybe the negative, and thorough encoding. The way it is presented here it's not really fun to watch this great , great film. So, three stars is all I can give for this version.
