The emotionally and physically charged lives of three people - a college professor (Sean Penn), an ex-con (Benicio Del Toro) and a young mother with a reckless past (Naomi Watts) - collide unexpectedly in this gripping suspense thriller. Fate brought them together. Now vengeance will take them to the heights of love, the depths of revenge and the promise of redemption. Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, and Naomi Watts give the finest performances of their careers in the film that is "tantalizingly alive!" (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly)

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Establishes [Inarritu] as a major cinematic force.
Fresh: Challenges and provokes in unexpected ways.
Fresh: You won't soon forget the world that Gonzalez Inarritu creates.
Rotten: A bleak, rather obvious melodrama disguised by a tricksy, time-splicing structure.
A Conflagration of Misery and Death
There is so much misery in this film that one is numbed by the end. Everyone is lost and no one is found. Even the del Toro character, who returns home after an confrontation with the consequences of his acts, faces deep problems. However, the technique that Inarritu uses to convey the story is well worth the watch. Cutting back and forth through time, forward and backward, he offers an opportunity for reflection that is uniquely achieved.

Soul ripping, heart pounding mind blowing Movie. Tuff movie to watch, and difficult to swallow.
This movie would be great for someone with ADHD. The story was very deep and the acting was superb, but the set up of the movie bounced around like crazy. I was able to get the point but was annoyed at the constant activity.
