Kai becomes their most deadly weapon and the heroic inspiration for these outnumbered warriors to confront their enemy and seize eternity.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "47 Ronin" can't entirely paper over the void at its center, traceable partly to the shadowboxing of computer-aided filmmaking or studio tinkering. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Dec 24, 2013

Rotten: An overlong, underwhelming movie now hitting theaters that certainly wasn't worth the wait. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Dec 24, 2013

Rotten: Solemn as a funeral march, humorless as your junior high principal, as Japanese as a grocery-store California roll, Keanu Reeves's let's-mope-about-and-kill-ourselves samurai drama has exactly three things going for it. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Dec 26, 2013

Rotten: Memo to Hollywood: Find another use for Keanu Reeves. – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News, Dec 24, 2013

Do not watch, do not buy

This movie is bad on so many levels. First, it relies on the CGI to tell a story that has nothing to do with Japan's most enduring and rich epic. Next it grossly misrepresents the story of the Ronin and their adherence to their understanding of Bushido. Thirdly, it anachronistically mixes eras, geographies, and themes to produce a muddled product that frankly is boring and offers nothing not already told on screen. Further, the fighting scenes are boring and predictable (I fell asleep during one it was so bad). My recommendation? Go find another martial arts movie. Frankly this movie should not have been made and Keanu Reeves should go look for something better.

Note that I saw this in the theater and it had (on a weekend) three other people watching the film. My theater is already down to one show a day and the manager told me that they're trying to get rid of it as fast as possible.

Its Great

This fictional adaptation of the story of the 47 Ronin is great. It has beautiful scenery, the special effects are great and it has a mystic storyline. However, it does closely follow the story of the forty-seven Ronin.

Thought-Provoking

It's a great adaption of the story of the 47 Ronin. The scenery is beautiful, and the acting and sets are very accurate in portraying medieval Japanese society. It's a thought-provoking story, and you'll never see it the same after watching this film
