Plot Summary

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen team up to beat the odds in a film that Rolling Stone calls ""achingly hilarious and heartfelt."" Diagnosed with spinal cancer, 27 year old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) navigates the road to recovery with the sometimes overbearing support of his crude best friend (Rogen), his smothering mother (Angelica Huston) and an inexperienced therapist (Anna Kendrick). Inspired by a true story of writer Will Reiser, 50/50 is an honest yet hysterically funny account of a young man's journey toward healing.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What ensues is "Beaches" meets "Pineapple Express." Which, I've got to tell you, is pretty much what living with cancer is like. – Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon.com, Sep 30, 2011

Fresh: In other hands, Adam might well be hard to take. But as the comedy in 50/50 turns darker, Gordon-Levitt, who's maybe the most natural, least affected actor of his generation, makes prickly plenty engaging. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Sep 30, 2011

Fresh: Still, it's Gordon-Levitt's choices that continue to impress. Sure, he owned one of the most jaw-dropping sequences in last summer's blockbuster Inception. But the actor remains drawn to profoundly human-scale hurts and quiet triumphs. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Sep 30, 2011

Fresh: Chances are about 90/10 that you'll enjoy 50/50. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Sep 30, 2011

"50/50" IS A WIN-WIN!

A good number of movies over the years have portrayed the struggles of a particular individual living with a life-altering condition, but none are as intelligently witty and genuinely heartfelt as "50/50". The acting is phenomenal, the script is smartly written, and the story is so simple, yet quite relatable at the same time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines as Adam, a 27-year-old man who has been diagnosed with spinal cancer. His performance is so convincing and realistic as a distraught, yet optimistic, young adult dealing with the ups and downs of a terrible situation, you'd swear his character was a real-life person. Seth Rogen's role as Kyle, Adam's crude best friend, is also top-notch. Like in every other movie Rogen has starred in, the hilariously raunchy lines that come out of his mouth don't disappoint. I should also commend Angelica Huston for delivering a stellar performance as Diane, Adam's stressed-out mother, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard for her role as Rachael, Adam's overbearing girlfriend. But above everyone else, I'd have to argue that Anna Kendricks is the real shining star. Her incredibly believable portrayal of Katie, an inexperienced psychologist who attempts to help Adam deal with his problems, is certainly a breath of fresh air. As for the character development, dialogue, and screenplay, they're all terrifically executed. Perhaps my only concern in the entire film is that Adam's Alzheimer's-stricken father, Richard, isn't seen or mentioned very often. It would've been nice to learn more about his character, although doing so could've taken away much from the cohesiveness of the story. All in all, "50/50" is, by far, one of the best movies of the year, period. It'll tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh out loud, and possibly give you a greater appreciation for life. If you get the chance, definitely buy or rent the movie. You'll be glad you did!

inspirational!

This movie helped me realize that cancer really is cancer and it doesn't matter what kind. I felt myself laughing and crying because I went through very similar situations after I was diagnosed. I wanted to share this movie with everyone in my life. If you know anyone with cancer it would be an awesome movie for them :)

Great movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a great, under appreciated actor. His performance in this movie is great. Seth Rogen's role is classic Seth Rogen. Great comedic moments. Great story. A real feel good movie. Must see. Don't sleep on this one.
