About the Movie
17 years later, the unrated "54: The Director's Cut" has been re-edited with 44 minutes of never before seen material. Exploring in greater depth a love triangle between a bartender, a coat check girl and a busboy in the biggest party on the planet.
Doesn't live up to the hype
Don't have high expectations of this film... If you're looking for the same reason I was. But I can tell you what to expect:
The added scenes have distinctly "unfinished" quality (and I mean visually) that you can literally tell the scenes that have been added (for the most part) because it looks terrible.
While the "gay factor" is definitely more up front in this edit, compared to the original release, don't expect any of the male leads to share anything but a kiss. And while Shane "54" O'shea definitely plays on both sides of the fence. Don't expect anything more than kissing, though more is implied at times. (This is contrary to what hyped up reports stated prior to release to get the gays excited)
Much less Neve Campbell, she's almost superfluous to the story.
Completely different ending.... No "flash forward" shots after the raid.
Some issues brought up about race that didn't really make sense to the plot.
Much of the added footage is shots of people dancing, you can tell because of the film quality. Though the story is a bit different with this edit, though the outcome is still the same.
Still amazing after all these years
The Directors cut of this film was amazing. It brought more depth to the characters and storyline. Don't let this hidden gem get away from you.
The Director's Cut is way better than the Original!
This is the version that should have been released originally in theaters, not the cut version. This version added more dimension to the characters. The music has been re-edited and remastered for the new Director's Cut, adding a better flow to the soundtrack. However, expect a very different ending...you be the judge! The extras include the Theater version of 54.
