About the Movie
From visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and Academy Award-nominated director Shane Acker comes this visually stunning and original epic adventure. In the final days of humanity, a dedicated scientist gives the spark of life to nine of his creations. The world has turned into an unrecognizable landscape of machines and spare parts, but this group of nine finds that if they band together, their small community might just be able to change the course of history. Featuring the voice talents of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly and Crispin Glover, it’s a thrilling, suspenseful story critics call "richly imaginative." (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)

Rotten: In movies, our technology is so often the ruin of us. We got that message from Stanley Kubrick way back when, and we get it now. But couldn't filmmakers let something else ruin us for a change? Even the apocalypse needs variety.
Rotten: The new version stays so true to the original you could describe it as a feature-length short-which is not the most staggering accomplishment.
Fresh: Gorgeously animated, beautifully executed and incredibly imaginative, Shane Acker's 9 manages to nonetheless feel a little bit like something you've seen before.
Fresh: Looking like a rag-doll version of Terminator Salvation, the film boasts an arresting visual style.
This film is absolutley stunning to look at, and it has a compelling story as well. The voice work is excellent, the visuals will pull you in, and the action will keep you hooked untill the end, then you will want to experience it all over again. It is pretty short, but that doesn't matter, because this is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again.
It's just okay...
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Tim Burton fan and appreciate great artwork when I see it.. but the story didn't do the artwork much justice at all. It was a pretty cool story, but almost belonged in a Disney movie (just very slightly more PG-13). The entire concept seemed to be based on a video game like model. Comparing it to a video game, BioShock was more artistic and had a much better story. The voodoo doll robot characters all have... or at least kind of have.. these "special abilities", none of which seem too creative. Many of the characters are poorly defined by anything other than their appearance and voice. The ending was somewhat disappointing. Overall the film didn't leave me very inspired, nor did it leave me deep in thought of it's meaning. Beetlejuice was better. heh.. Still worth watching when you are in the mood for a little eye candy. When my wife asked me what I thought of it after we had finished watching, I simply said "meh".
3 times, baby!
