Plot Summary

The latest searing drama from French master Garrel (Regular Lovers) loosely evokes Godard’s Contempt, as a once-happy marriage between a brooding painter (Louis Garrel) and his movie-star wife (Monica Bellucci) hits the rocks. When another young couple joins them on a Roman holiday, tensions and passions flare. With a score by the Velvet Underground’s John Cale, and the legendary Maurice Garrel in his final role.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Here and elsewhere you linger in moments that, like memories and dreams, can feel severed from storybook time. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jun 28, 2012

Fresh: Although Angele's religious faith and Frederic's belief in luck seem like strained attempts at adding heft to the material, the film nevertheless works up a potent dramatic restlessness... – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Jun 26, 2012

Rotten: This existential-romantic roundelay barely simmers, and certainly doesn't scorch. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Jun 21, 2012

Rotten: While I have to acknowledge Garrel's skill, the film, which actually has its compelling moments, falls somewhat flat. – Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 20, 2012

Pretentious??

Could it have been slower? I doubt it. Pretentious, poor writing, and heavy, slow direction.
