About the Movie
The high voltage story of a group of young performers who audition for the chorus of a Broadway musical. Zach a famous Broadway producer, who is holding auditions for a new Broadway musical. As armies of dancers are brought on stage to audition for Zach, he sits in the darkened recesses of the theater, puffing on a cigarette and deciding which hopeful dancers will be in the chorus line. When he has reduced the dancers to 16 men and women, Zach asks each of them to step to the footlights and tell him about their lives, loves and dreams.
See It On The Stage
This movie is painful to watch, especially since I have seen the stage production of "A Chorus Line" on stage. The stage production was brilliant. This movie is over -acted, over produced, and over the top. There are story lines that have been added from the original and I guess they tried to "Dumb it down" for the movie going masses. "A Chorus Line" was the longest running show on Broadway for good reason. It was new, it was fresh, it was brilliant. This movie is boring from the beginning. I know I am supposed to care for the characters, but I couldn't bring myself to do so.
The casting choices are baffling.
They took a masterpiece and made it into a mess.
Save your money and see the stage production when it comes to your town, and it will. It's that good.
A Chorus Line: A Very Different Kind Of Musical
When "A Chorus Line" was originally written, it was different than most anything else that would be found on Broadway yet, so many people had their doubts about it, and about how successful it could really become. Personally, I love it. In the beginning it gives an inside look into the world of Broadway auditions, for those of us not lucky enough to catch the break and get there ourselves. Then, later, you come to find that it is a very different kind of audition, and you get to hear the characters sing about their pasts. The range of these songs go from very funny, "Nothing" & "I Can Do That", to heartfelt songs to bring a tear to your eye, "At The Ballet" and "What I Did For Love". This movie includes great casting, amazing music, good choreography, and a look at the rollercoaster that life becomes when you are truly a part of the show-business.
The movie version truly lost the true and great story behind what Micheal Bennett worked so vicously and hard for...it really is a shame that the movie does not even come close. Its entertaining, but that at least. They couldnt even keep the original and famous choreography. Comes no where close to Micheals original idea, and just stole his shows name...pitty
