Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: There is tremendous visual craft and inarguable style here, but none of the discipline, the sense of pacing and proportion that would allow the filmmaker's creative instincts to soar rather than merely splutter. – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times, Feb 16, 2017

Rotten: Verbinski inflates a story ready-made for a brisk Gothic shocker into a bloated, self-important mess. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Feb 20, 2017

Fresh: Verbinski's gothic psychological thriller is absorbing. It unfolds in a maze even Theseus would not escape. It will keep you guessing until the almost unbelievable ending. – Stephen Romei, The Australian, Mar 24, 2017

Fresh: Verbinksi's atmosphere-building skills, however, are exemplary. He has such control over pacing and tension, audiences will be on the edge of their seats right up until the preposterous end. – Vicky Roach, Daily Telegraph (Australia), Mar 22, 2017

Brilliant and beautiful film.

People who are giving this film low ratings are the same people responsible for there being 8 fast and furious films. This is a brilliant and beautifully shot film.

Do. Not. Buy.

This movie was seriously one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Mind you, I begged people I knew to go see this with me. I told them it was going to be amazing and blow-your-mind-beautiful. I was wrong. Oh god, how I was wrong.

Take a horrible plot, add some questionable acting (aside from Mia Goth, who was great) and add a terribly written script, and you might be halfway to the actuality of how bad this movie was.

When the movie started, I was annoyed because the couple next to us who were laughing and talking. By the middle of the movie, we were literally laughing with them at the movie. This movie is not a comedy.

By the time it was over, my body was numb, having endured this terrible movie in a tiny seat for hours. But it couldn't compare to my brain, which had completed anesthetized itself to protect from further any harm incurred by watching the film.

In the car home, I had to apologize to the people I was with for how bad it was. I apologized the next day, too.

You may be thinking, "Hmm...can it really be that bad? Maybe I'll rent it just to see." Do not be tempted, my child. While you may get your $4.99 back, you will never get back the time. Do not let me have watched this in vain, for warning you is the only way I can make any meaning out of the experience.

Better then most.

OK, this might not be the best movie in the world however it is far better than much of the trivial and formulaic tripe that gets put out nowadays. To watch a movie that is original and where I I genuinely have no idea what's going to happen, has become a bit of a treat. This is one such movie. I hope that by supporting it, we get more of this and less fast and furious 10.
