Astaire teams up with Burns & Allen to bring some good ol' American music and mayhem to stately England. There, lovely Joan Fontaine pines for a husband and finds Astaire. Naturally, A Damsel in Distress becomes a lady in love. Enjoy George Gershwin's last completed score, including the pensive "A Foggy Day" amd "Nice Work If You Can Get It" plus the famed Astaire-Burns-Allen fun house dance and other inspired stepping-out that earned dance director Hermes Pan an Academy Award. Renowned "Jeeves" humorist P.G Wodehouse writes and George Stevens (Giant, Shane) directs.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Astaire and his vet terp aide, Hermes Pan, have devised four corking dance routines which director George Stevens has expertly envisioned and mounted.
Fresh: Burns and Allen were imported to balance her lack of humor; their presence is certainly welcome, and their work with Astaire is surprisingly effective.
Fresh: Nicely directed but a bit on the twee side with its Wodehouse plot and mock Englishisms, the result would be questionable but for a rich Gershwin score.
one of my all-time fave classics
I love this movie.
Having been introduced to this movie by my great-uncle when I was a child, and growing up with musicals featuring Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, and so on, I am thrilled to have found this on iTunes - my VHS copy is long since worn out!
This movie is based on the book by the same name written by P.G. Wodehouse. The screen play for this movie was also written by P.G. Wodehouse.
Considered a flop by Fred Astaire fans when it was realeased in 1937, as he was not paired with Ginger Rogers, it features comic relief by George Burns and Gracie Allen in classic vaudeville style (Stiff Upper Lip), and music by George and Ira Gershwin - most notable being Fred Astaire singing, "A Foggy Day in London Town".
Fred Astaire plays Jerry Halliday, a famous American actor on holiday in England, and Joan Fontaine plays Lady Alyce Marshmorton, the daughter with royal blood whose parents can't keep her from meeting the American man she's in love with. Hilarity ensues when Jerry Halliday's publicist (Geroge Burns) prints he's in love with a Lady while on holiday... but is he really? and is Lady MArshmorton's love Jerry Halliday? Watch the movie to find out.
