About the Movie

Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps, and other sordid souls, is a place that reeks of death and hopelessness, where a lonely vampire is stalking the towns' most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl, an unusual love story begins to blossom...blood red.The first Iranian Vampire Western, Ana Lily Amirpour's debut feature basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno and Morricone-inspired riffs, its airy, anamorphic, black-and-white aesthetic and artfully drawn out scenes combined with simmering tension to make the first Iranian Vampire Western.

Fresh: It's a haunting story of love between two misfits who shouldn't be together. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jan 8, 2015

Fresh: There's not much story to speak of, but the semi-Iranian hipster feminist vampire romance A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is gorgeous to behold and up to its jugular vein in quirky/spooky atmosphere. – Bruce Ingram, Chicago Sun-Times, Jan 7, 2015

Fresh: Cool, supremely confident ... – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Feb 27, 2015

A lot of potential, but doesn’t deliver

Couldn’t wait to see this one after the trailer promised what looked to be a fantastic off-beat vampire film. The visuals are stunning, and there’s an assured confidence to the filmmaking, but the lack of plot and slow pacing made the film feel indulgent and stretched. I was rooting for this film and wanted to love it, but ultimately grew restless and bored. Sorry to say, the trailer made for a better experience than the drawn out film.

Unbelievable

Amazing. An Iranian Pulp Fiction of sorts. A blend of new and old. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys noir.

Best of the year

This is the best movie I saw made in 2014. Quietly suspenseful. Intensely cool. Rock star filmmaking at its best.
