About the Movie

Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, and Sigourney Weaver star in this visually spectacular and stunningly emotional drama. Young Conor's life takes a turn after his mother (Felicity Jones) becomes ill and he moves in with his unsympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). As an escape, Conor turns to his artwork and conjures up a 40-foot-high monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) who becomes a most unlikely ally by guiding him on a journey of courage, faith and truth that powerfully fuses imagination and reality.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A Monster Calls isn't so much for kids as it is for grownups. It's a reminder of the time when we, too, thought only of ourselves-and found it too much to bear. – Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Magazine, Jan 5, 2017

Fresh: Why is it so rare to find films "for children" with this kind of maturity and attention to technique? – Andrew Lapin, NPR, Jan 5, 2017

Fresh: This is a tough movie that takes on adult issues and doesn't shy away from the grim realities of its subject matter. But that's what makes this grim children's story work. It's a work of lovely darkness. – Adam Graham, Detroit News, Jan 6, 2017

Fresh: "A Monster Calls" is an involving, surprisingly mature tale of pre-adolescent loss, passing innocence and hard-won coming of age. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jan 5, 2017

A beautiful tear jerker

Such an beautifully crafted movie, I definitely recommend everyone to watch it. If oscars go to 14 year olds I'd give it to Lewis Macdougall! I gave this a four star cause I wasn't really engaged in the plot and it kinda dragged a bit. Other then that, the movie is fantastic!

I hate to love this movie

but I do.

When you know you have time to say goodbye to a loved one, especially your mom, be as loud as possible. Try to say goodbye in as many ways as possible. Don't be invisible. Incorporate the 21 ways to be more visible.

And love. Love everything even if you hate it.

Oh-and always carry tissues.

Not what I expected - it was so much more - just beautiful!
