Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Chan's skill with actors - particularly with Ms. Mei and Mr. Pang's persuasive, easygoing banter - compensates for the story's limitations.
Fresh: A curiously likable, entertainingly laid-back Asian-American take on all-too-familiar dysfunctional family tropes, this Kickstarter-enabled effort boldly mines farce along with sentiment.
Fresh: Nimbly avoiding the excesses of melodrama and the recessiveness of mumblecore, Chan and his likably low-key cast navigate hairpin turns from drama to comedy to outright farce with an impressive sense of proportion.
Fresh: This disarmingly low-key genre-hybrid delivers both dramatically and comedically.
This is a very funny movie about how we deal with loss and grief and pain -- the director and the cast do an amazing job of presenting potentially somber material in a way that is funny and moving and always engaging. Do not miss this movie.
Extremely funny and smart
Without spoiling the movie, let's just say that the movie tricks you into thinking it's going to be one thing but then suddenly turns into something else. It's a genius way to describe the feeling of losing someone close to you, with all the unexpected ups and downs that go with it. I've never seen the grieving process captured so brilliantly before in film.

For one, at the beginning, I was expecting it to be all full of drama. However, there are pleasant surprises that leave you with light-hearted humour and amusement.
The characters represented were presented well, and with focus on growth and tackling the Asian stereotypes to an amusing and funny approach.
