Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A good example of the kind of soporific nonsense that won rave reviews and armloads of Academy Awards back in the 50s, while the finest work of Ford, Hawks, and Hitchcock was being ignored. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: One of the great studio dramas of the period and one of this column's favourite films, with haunting performances from Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. – Evan Williams, The Australian, Jun 27, 2014

Fresh: Montgomery Clift's performance as upward-striving pauper George Eastman is a career peak, and Elizabeth Taylor is a gleaming paragon as his high-society paramour. – Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph (UK), Feb 1, 2013

Fresh: Gripping from first to last. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Jan 31, 2013

This is one of my favorite films with Montgomery Clift. Could you make it available to own.?

Entertaining Movie for the 1950's. Please make it available to own. Renting is a waste of money.

(Based On) a true story..

It's amusing to read some of the 'tomatoes' because this amazing film is based on a true story. I could look it up, again, and look brilliant here but I truthfully can't remember the fellow's name (M.C.'s character). However.. Interesting trivia for you.. The real George Eastman (?).. Was also a handsome man who, while on death row (and not unlike many a murderer today) received many fan letters from female admirers.. Including monetary donations which he used to have meals catered to him while awaiting his execution! Interesting, eh?!

A true classic.. 'A Place in The Sun' will keep your attention as the story moves right along with stellar performances from not only Montgomery and Liz but a rather convincing Shelly Winters (very under-rated I believe!). Rent and enjoy(!)... Or hope, as I do, they will list it for sale soon as it is a must for your collection!

Best Wishes.

A classic, based upon a classic

This movie deserved Oscars. The acting was superb, and the story loosely based upon a real life murder, as another reviewer had noted.
This movie is based upon Dreisser's novel, "An American Tragedy", which in turn was based on the Adirondack murder of GRace Brown at the hands of Chester Gillette. Gillette tried ignore the fact that he had gotten Brown pregnant until, in the end he dealt with it, and dealt with it quite badly indeed.

I have lived in the Adirondacks, and know the GIlette story well. This movie is nearly as heart wrenching as the real crime, and Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters deliver outstanding dramatic performances. Whoever gave this a less than four star review was just plain wrong in their assessment.
