About the Movie

Set in contemporary Iran, A SEPARATION is a compelling drama about the dissolution of a marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter Termeh. Simin sues for divorce when Nader refuses to leave behind his Alzheimer-suffering father. Her request having failed, Simin returns to her parents' home, but Termeh decides to stay with Nader. However, when he discovers that the new maid has been lying to him, he realizes that there is more on the line than just his marriage.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Some films wear their artistry so lightly they appear simply to be happening, the inner workings of the story guided by an unseen hand. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jan 26, 2012

Fresh: This is a trenchant emotional thriller that you watch in dread, awe, and amazing aggravation. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jan 26, 2012

Fresh: Asghar Farhadi's emotionally epic movie is not just a masterpiece dramatically, it is a movie dramatically of its moment. – John Anderson, Newsday, Jan 27, 2012

Fresh: The film involves its audience in an unusually direct way, because although we can see the logic of everyone's position, our emotions often disagree. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jan 26, 2012

This Movie won both the golden globe and the Oscar for best foregn film. One of the few films I went into with high expectations and was not disappointed. A deeply moving and fascinating look at modern Persian society. If you are a fan of foreign cinema, this is a MUST SEE!

I need to watch a chick flick after this

This movie is so captivating that I forgot they were speaking a different language. I experienced a range of emotions from tearful happiness, to raging anger, and everything in between. I was yelling at my computer screen as if they could hear me. Absolutely one of the best movies I've ever watched...woossa...I need to watch a chick flick after this dose of reality.
