"A Single Man" is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it is the story of a British college professor (Colin Firth) who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner. The story is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life. 2009 Critics’ Choice Awards nominations include Colin Firth (Best Actor), Julianne Moore (Best Actress), Best Screenplay and Best Art Direction. 2010 Golden Globe nominations include Colin Firth (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama), Julianne Moore (Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture) and Best Original Score - Motion Picture.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man is unspeakably gorgeous to behold. From the glorious cinematography to the impossibly beautiful actors and actresses; no frame is wasted on anything even close to ugliness.
Fresh: A highly impressive filmmaking debut by former Gucci designer Tom Ford.
Fresh: The movie wasn't so much directed as it was designed.
Rotten: Firth is the standout. While it's no surprise his performance has earned him a Best Actor Oscar nod, the film itself is not nearly as powerful as it should have been.
WHY IS THIS NOT OFFERED IN HI-DEF?
A Single Man has amazing cinematography and should thus be offered in HD format. Hello Apple, this is the 21st century, all movies should be offered in high definition format.
This film had the juiciest angles in every shot. There was never a moment where you weren't enrapt in this movie's beauty.
This is one of the best films I've EVER seen- and this is coming from a self professed film-o-phile. The cinematography is breathtaking from an aesthetic standpoint, and the ideas behind the different shots and angles are heartachingly beautiful as well. A Single Man manages to be wonderfully serious and dark while at the same time sending small beams of hope and positivity bouncing off the screen. Truly a moving experience. I can hardly believe that Tom Ford had no prior experience in filmmaking- his debut movie is more poignant and hard-hitting than the vast majority of films by seasoned producers and directors.
This is one of those movies that can very possibly change lives.. perhaps yours. It is worth every penny.
