About the Movie

A Star is Born marked Judy Garland's return to movies after a four-year absence, director George Cukor's first musical and first color film, and a showcase for great Harold Arden/Ira Gershwin songs in state-of-the-art stereo. One of the most beloved show-business stories of all time, it represents a career peak for many involved. Garland is singer Esther Blodgett, an undeniable talent on the rise. She catches the eye of Norman Maine (James Mason), an alcoholic actor in career decline. Their intense love transforms them both. Only one will survive Hollywood's slings and arrows. Shortened in response to exhibitor complaints after its premiers, the movie underwent one rebirth in 1983 when film historian Ronald Haver found almost all the cut sequences and supervised a reconstruction to near its original length. Its new rebirth is this breathtaking digital surround stereo track and incorporating picture and musical material recently found in the vaults. Star always had a shine to it. Now watch it sparkle as never before.

An Amazing Tribute To A Legendary Entertainer

I'm going to assume the reason this has not been reviewed is because iTunes has just begun offering "A Star Is Born" for Rent or Sale. In any case, this film is a stunning visual feast for Judy Garland Fans and for the Musical. There are so many beautiful songs such as "The Man That Got Away". Judy Garland and James Mason give depth and heart into this story about a woman's climb to fame and how she overlooks the man who loves her. Yes, Barbra Streisand did a remake and it was also fantastic, but nothing matches Judy's true honesty. Treat yourself to one beautiful film. Enjoy the Legend!

Judy at her peak

A Star is Born was made at a time when Judy's voice was at it's peak. Her voice is absolutely enchanting and makes chills run down my spin. Judy shows so much ambition, vulnerability, and love in a perfect balance. It makes her character mote believable. You believe her as a struggling singer who wants to make it big, but not at the cost of the one she loves. James Mason does a fantastic job as troubled alcoholic star on the decline. He was the perfect leading man for Judy. He brings the same amount of believablity as Judy. A Star is Born is an amazing film and is a must see for any Judy, James, or musical fan.

Overlong and overrated

Garland delivers a masterful performance (The Man that Got Away is one of her best songs ever), but the film is way too long and boring. The songs don't really add anything to the story. Cukor was always a very slow-paced director, but here it is just ridiculous. I recommend the better (and shorter) 1937 version with Janet Gaynor.
