Rotten: I don't know what to make of Act of Valor. It's like reviewing a recruiting poster. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Feb 26, 2012

Rotten: Fighting is a learned skill; so is acting. And the SEAL stars are plausible only when on maneuvers - performing as their own stunt doubles. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Feb 26, 2012

Rotten: A mechanically efficient yet soulless dramatization of the U.S. Navy SEALs in action. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Feb 24, 2012

Rotten: As a piece of filmed entertainment, "Act of Valor" will never be mistaken for "Top Gun," but it's a heck of a recruitment video. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Feb 24, 2012

A PURELY PATRIOTIC ACTION FILM

I tend to steer away from reading most professional critics' reviews whenever I go to the movies. I didn't even bother looking at the Tomato Meter rating before seeing "Act of Valor", and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. I didn't walk into the theater expecting an action-packed masterpiece with brilliant acting and an Oscar-worthy script. I simply wanted to be entertained for a couple of hours, and the film more than delivered on that behalf. Sure, it had its obvious flaws here and there, but I still had a great time watching it. The story basically follows an elite team of highly trained U.S. Navy SEALs as they embark on a top-secret operation when a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA operative unexpectedly results in the discovery of an imminent global threat. Of course, you can probably tell from that simple synopsis that it's not exactly the most inventive or memorable premise in recent memory, but what makes it work for the most part is the way it's told. The pacing is swift and the screenplay is concise and relatively easy to follow along with. The acting, on the other hand, is definitely nothing to rave about. But then again, the cast is primarily made up of real life active-duty Navy SEALs, so they at least deserve the benefit of the doubt. I will say, however, that the combat sequences are exceptionally well-executed and stunningly filmed. More often than not, I was on the edge of my seat, awestruck by the terrific set pieces and realistic warfare. Still, I couldn't help but feel a bit let down by the script's persistently one-sided perspective of the soldiers. Personally, I felt it would've been refreshing to see the terrorists' point of view in a less clichéd way than how it was inevitably presented, but I digress. In the end, "Act of Valor" may not be the most narratively successful or well-acted action flick you'll ever see, but its unabashed reverence to the heroic actions of our nation's troops is certainly worth commending. As a well-intentioned tribute to its Navy SEAL stars and as an overly jingoistic recruitment poster, the film works both ways. Take it for what it is as a whole, and you'll be entertained the whole way through.

Amazing!

I don't see why there are so many rotten tomatoes. This movie is absolutely amazing! Definitely worth buying and watching more than once.

Respect the SEALs

The men who selflessly give themselves in service of their country should always be regarded as patriotic. Whether you agree with what they do or not, patriots are both people who fight for the United States, and people who fight to change the United States for the better. Both play an equally important part. If you want to know how the Navy SEALs do their part in service of the United States, then watch this movie. If you don't agree with the way that America currently handles acts of terrorism, or feel that non violence is the best approach to global relations always, you may not enjoy this movie. In the end, we all should respect the diligence, honor, and hard work the Navy SEALs express in protecting every citizen of the United States. These guys allow us to live in a country where we are free to express our opinion. Everyone can respect that to some degree. Me personally, I loved it.
