Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie takes off from a concept as basic as a videogame, and it sticks to that concept, without surprise. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, May 31, 2013

Rotten: As drama, After Earth offers no surprises; as action, it's rarely stimulating; as a parenting manual, it seems that Will has thrown Jaden into water that's a little too deep. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, May 2, 2014

Rotten: The characters are emotionally neutered; the average viewer won't care about them. The pacing is plodding and uneven. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, May 31, 2013

Rotten: The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. – Anthony Quinn, Independent (UK), May 2, 2014

Wasn't bad

This movie wasn't that bad. I mean come on now, we've all seen worse for crying out loud.

This movie was dull meaning the story, directing and acting was nothing special, but it was not bad. I've seen a lot worst movies this year and After Earth is not one of them. Honestly I think people just like hatin' on M. Night Shyamalan because his movies are weird and hasn't made a great movie since The Sixth Sense. Honestly I actually enjoyed After Earth. I went in expecting to see the worst movie ever (since that what critics were saying) but I actually liked it. I mean although it wasn't amazing the movie kept my attention until the very end. Visually it's very beautiful and Will and Jaden did the best with the script they were given. Overall the movie was ok I wouldn't buy it but its definitely worth renting.

Epic dud.

This movie was designed to make us associate Will Smith's star power with Will Smith's kid for the sake of his own budding career, and it was annoyingly obvious. That actually ruined the whole movie. A lot of big names were picked to work on a project that served this kid's career rather than the story, so of course it's going to fail. Total waste of effort, and not at all the epic movie it was meant to be. Not worth even the discounted purchase price they're trying to get for it, and once it's a rental or on Netflix, even then it's still barely watchable as an ok watch-once type of movie.
