About the Movie

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie takes off from a concept as basic as a videogame, and it sticks to that concept, without surprise. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, May 31, 2013

Rotten: As drama, After Earth offers no surprises; as action, it's rarely stimulating; as a parenting manual, it seems that Will has thrown Jaden into water that's a little too deep. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, May 2, 2014

Rotten: The characters are emotionally neutered; the average viewer won't care about them. The pacing is plodding and uneven. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, May 31, 2013

Rotten: The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. – Anthony Quinn, Independent (UK), May 2, 2014

It's ok

Movie would have been better if it didn't have Will Smith's son in it; he just isn't a very good actor.

After Earth

Not Good!!!!!! Don’t waste your time or money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first time reviewing a film

I'm 56 and have watched many films in my life. I've worked in Hospital ICU's for many years so I don't think I'm dumb, although my wife thinks I'm very absent-minded.
I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this picture. I'm only biased in that I like science-fiction and special effects but I still know an entertaining movie when I see one. I believe the critical reviewers perhaps have other reasons for dumping on this film and it seems to be their personal dislike for the Director. If that's true, such a poor excuse to ruining it for the public.
