About the Movie
An isolated convent becomes the setting for murder in this suspenseful tale of spiritual passion and pride. Jane Fonda, Ann Bancroft and Meg Tilly star in Norman Jewison's riveting adaptation of the hit Broadway drama. When the infant of a young nun, Agnes (Tilly), is found strangled, a court-appointed psychiatrist, Martha Livingston (Fonda), must decide if the devout but troubled girl is fit to stand trial. In her quest for truth, Martha goes head to head with the intractable Mother Superior (Bancroft), who assures her that Agnes has no memory of the pregnancy. But the probe uncovers mysterious aspects of Agnes' personality, which lead to a shattering climax. Is AGNES OF GOD a hysterical young woman or is her ordeal divinely inspired?

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Miss Tilly makes a radiant Agnes, and Miss Bancroft a shrewd, forceful Mother Superior, but the writing limits each of their roles.
Fresh: All three stars do smart, honorable work.
Rotten: Fonda's relentless interrogating, mannered chain-smoking and enforced two dimensionality cause her to become tiresome very early on.
Fresh: It is Meg Tilly who makes the movie live. Her performance, which works on both realistic and symbolic levels, allows you to believe in the story.
This film should be far more popular then it is, Agnes of god is beautifully written and acted. Columbia Pictures did a great job on the production and it simply blew me away. This Drama is worth watching.
Agnes of God - Based on award-winning play
Agnes of God is a scintillating thriller/mystery/intermingling of the lives of three women. The superb ensemble cast (Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly as Agnes ...a role played by Amanda Plummer on Broadway) captivates throughout the film. As you might guess, and as I recall... the play and the film were both lambasted by the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy at those times ... that said, the portrayals of the three women are honest.. showing them as "human beings", foibled and caught up in an interwoven tale of pain, loss, shame, grief and finally of healing, redemption and peace. I heartily recommend it and just purchased it - realizing today that it was NOT in my film library (OMG!). The direction by Norman Jewison is thoughtful, and the cimematic treatments are breathtaking. To simply call it a "far-fetched" story misses the point by parsecs. Remember that a HUGE part of fiction-writing and theater and film-appreciation hinges upon our willingness to "suspend our disbelief" and "be" in the story. I'm sure the film is not everybody's cuppa tea! But,... my thumbs are WAY up ... see it and judge for yourself.
A little far-fetched, but it still has a deeper meaning about our beliefs.
