About the Movie

Nominated for 3 Academy Awards®, this powerful and poignant film stars Glenn Close as a woman who poses as a man in order to work and survive in repressive 19th century Ireland. Some thirty years after donning men's clothing, "Albert" must find a way to free herself from a prison of her own making in this elegantly told dramatic tale featuring a talented international cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Janet McTeer, Brenda Fricke, and Pauline Collins.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It's a career-crowning role for Glenn Close. Too bad the film is such a drag. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Jan 26, 2012

Rotten: What you feel, watching Close, is not that you are watching gender being bent into new, absorbing shapes but that you might as well have stayed home and leafed through a book on Magritte. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jan 30, 2012

Fresh: [A] funny, sorrowful, richly layered and tremendously moving film. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 27, 2012

Fresh: [It] sneaks up on the audience with the quiet discretion of the enigmatic protagonist at its center. And, like him, it contains multitudes beneath its prim surface. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jan 27, 2012

This movie is ridiculous.

But... better than "The Iron Lady" story & acting wise.

Tis more of a horrible representation of a comedy inspired by transexual events. But it had me rolling out of my chair with laughter.

Glenn Close is amazing, don't get me wrong. This movie was just.... odd.

glenn close...

such a handsome woman

I agree; this movie was odd. Interesting but odd.
