Plot Summary

Don't Let The Theatrical Cut Deter You

I personally can't finish the theatrical cut of this film, however this version is the closest to David Fincher's vision that we're going to get. The theatrical cut is a bitter reminder that studios don't know what is best in any sense. With the continuous rewrites and manipulation during production Fincher walked away before the cutting room and he will never speak of this film. This version gives more insight into the characters and their dynamic. Instead of the theatrical version where bodies stack up and you don't care about any of the characters, you understand their backstory as well as the new envisioning of the xenomorph alien. If you're a fan of the Alien franchise i suggest giving this cut a try, even if you despise the theatrical cut, like me. This version is worth your time for at least one screening.

Warning re: the audio

Note: this is the 2003 version of the special edition of Alien 3 which was released with poor audio quality, NOT the 2010 re-release which replaced or repaired the compromised audio. That is the primary reason for my three star review.

That complaint out of the way, the special edition is a superior cut of the film, which expands on several characters and themes, and features an interesting subplot in the middle of the film where Ripley and the inmates successfully capture the alien before one of the more deranged prisoners (who simply vanishes half way through the theatrical cut) releases the creature, believing it is the "bringer of the apocalypse"...

Definitely a "must rent" but save your money and buy the blu-ray which has better audio...

An Underrated Masterpiece

I had always heard that Alien 3 was what ruined the series but when I finally saw the special edition for myself I was amazed. Though this movie is a flawed one, it is also quite visually stunning and atmospheric. Sigourney Weaver yet again does a terrific job acting. Alien 3 functions as an engaging dark sic-fi story rather than a horror movie or an action movie like it's predecessors. I would recommend this movie to those who seek a valid, if flawed, continuation to the Alien saga.
