Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: As redesigns go, Alien: Covenant is not ambitious, but it's roaringly, repulsively effective. – Guy Lodge, Newsweek, May 26, 2017

Rotten: Yet director Ridley Scott -- who birthed the original nearly 40 years ago as well as that last film -- plunges back into the latter's mythology, with equally uninspired and perhaps more blatantly derivative results. – Brian Lowry, CNN.com, May 18, 2017

Fresh: A shamelessly high-minded, Byron-and-Shelley-quoting existential inquiry into the origin of three species and the nature of belief that goes slumming in genre territory just enough to get itself greenlit. – Chris Klimek, NPR, May 18, 2017

Fresh: Peel away the big budget genre film's veneer of Western Civ for Dummies (Michelangelo, Wagner, Byron and Shelley) and what you have is rather conventional Lego blocks of sci-fi horror. – Thelma Adams, New York Observer, May 19, 2017

The Origin of Alien: Why are they going this way?

Something in paradise is wrong. Ridley Scott makes his second attempt on answering the "what if" questions and follows up to his 2012 Prometheus. We are still left with questions!! I'll say that first off. Alien: covenant is a beautiful shot film. Top notch music. The 1st hour is amazing. It's just when the questions from the ending of Prometheus are answered. They are not the best answers.

The storyline is not the best. Yet it is entertaining. But the answers we get from this film are mind-boggling. You keep asking yourself why did ridley Scott chose this path.
Nothing is connected yet with the original alien so I guess we're gonna have to wait for another prequel to get our answers.

Awfully stupid characters

I've been a fan of the Alien universe ever since, the original and latter Aliens and even Alien 3.

The rest including Prometheus were bad.

This however is specially bad and incurres in the same sins than its predecessor. When your script has trained scientists and soldiers showing an intelligence level equal to a parrot, you know your not doing the right thing. The Alien in this movie is not even that scary....It would seem that any guy with an IQ higher than 90 and a shotgun would be able to kill it. It looks unstoppable to them because they act with a level of idiocy only seen in b movies.

I mean come on....you land on an unknown, unexplored, unscanned planet and you wear kakis and shirts? What about bacteria and viruses that you idiots aren't prepared for? The rest of the movie is filled with equally exasperating moments.

Time to look elsewhere for a worthy sequel...

The Alien movie we wanted

This is the best film in the franchise since Aliens. It continues the plot of Prometheus, but also sets up for the original Alien. It is a wonderful clash of the philosophical aspect of Prometheus and the visceral effects from Alien. It answers many of the questions we had from Prometheus, but leaves us with some new questions. It requires the audience to connect the dots, which I respect greatly. Ridley Scott did a fantastic job at creating his most outlandish and brutal film yet. If you are a fan of the Alien franchise and want some answers from Prometheus, this movie will NOT disappoint.
