Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: An old-fashioned scary movie set in a highly realistic sci-fi future, made all the more believable by expert technical craftmanship.
Fresh: Alien looks amazing, almost like a new film.
Fresh: Ridley Scott's new cut won't change the way people think about the movie, but it reinforces the film's strengths without alienating the series' biggest fans.
Fresh: Besides Weaver and Skeritt, the top-notch ensemble includes two of Britain's best actors -- Ian Holm, as the untrustworthy science officer, and John Hurt.
30 years since its theatrical release... this movie and its masterful preview still dominate in terms of thriller-type movies. In my opinion, this is one of the most masterfully done movies ever made. From beginning to end it was masterfully constructed, and unlike most movies of its time, no number of years or technological advancements in the movie-making community establish any level of cheese factor for this movie.
The special effects remain effective, the actors remain believable, and the plot holds a classical sci-fi horror feel that in my opinion defines this genre of science fiction. The inescapability of an endoparasitic alien species has been reproduced by many directors since the release of this movie in 1979, but none draw even close to the fearsome, personally uncomfortable wrath of the face-huggers, chest-bursters, and full-grown aliens that follow.
This movie is an absolute must see, comparable to other masterful thriller works such as Silence of the Lambs. I would more than recommend paying the money to view this film; the sheer thrill of it more than pays it back.
Where are the director's cuts?
I love the original Alien films but I'd love to see the director's cuts available on here...they are superior in every way...that bring said this film is a must own. It's mind blowingly tense and terrifying in a way that only "The Descent" and "Martyrs" have been able to evoke since this film was released. It is so rare for a film to be truly terrifying like this. The slow burn narrative focusing on character development, and the terrifying grand horror ending really make this film a true classic that must be seen, especially by new fans of the science fiction horror genre and players of "dead space".
One of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, right after Aliens!!
