About the Movie

Life for 15 year old Ruthie (Stefania Owen) and her young mother, Rita (Katie Holmes), has never been stable. Fleeing Rita’s latest boyfriend, they find themselves living out of their beat-up car and heading east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they are stranded in a small town where Rita ultimately lands a steady job waitressing at Tiny’s, a local diner where they begin to develop a family: tender-hearted Marty (Richard Kind), the owner of the diner, and Pam (Eve Lindley), a transgender waitress with big dreams who becomes Ruthie’s closest friend.

Rotten: A well-meaning but formulaic movie with not enough time to transcend predictable cliches. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Dec 8, 2016

Fresh: Even in a rote story, with prosaic direction from Holmes, the lead performances ring true. – Nathalie Atkinson, New York Magazine/Vulture, Dec 9, 2016

Fresh: Katie Holmes puts in a memorable shift as a struggling single mom in her impressive directorial debut. – Ed Gibbs, Little White Lies, Apr 22, 2016

Wonderful performances

I liked this movie. Katie Holmes and the girl that plays her daughter are really great in it! Very moving story.

movie fan

Katie Holmes has created a masterful film filled with tendrer complex relationsips between fully realized characters. There were so many moments in this film that moved me, it's hard to recount them all. The mother daugher realationship has never been expored so deeply and skillfully in a film. This is an extraordinary work of art. Katie's acting is Oscar worthy. And I would not be all surprised if both Eve Lindley and Stephania Owen get Oscar nods for their supporting roles. A true gem of a film. One that I think will speak to many people and resonate for years to come.

A must see

Amazing storyline with amazing acting. So impressed with Katie's ability to be in front as well as behind the camera on this one! I'm sure ocsar nominations are in it's future! Job well done! Would recommend you see this film.
