About the Movie
The acclaimed documentary ALMOST HOLY tells the story of Gennadiy Mohknenko, a Ukrainian pastor who has taken up the fight against child homelessness by forcibly abducting street kids and bringing them to his private rehabilitation center. Gennadiy's ongoing efforts and unabashedly tough love approach to his city's problems has made him a folk hero to some, and a lawless vigilante to others. Using gripping footage that follows the self-appointed savior's mission over the course of fifteen years, interspersing imagery from a popular Soviet animated TV show; ALMOST HOLY is a bold and captivating portrait of a man fighting to change Ukraine for the better, as its place in a tense political landscape hangs in the balance. Directed by Steve Hoover (Sundance Grand Jury prize winner for BLOOD BROTHER), executive produced by Terrence Malick and Nicolas Gonda, and with a score by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Bobby Krlic.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Hoover's style seems equally fit for a bleak documentary, suspenseful thriller, black comedy, dystopian sci-fi nightmare and grisly horror film.
Fresh: "Almost Holy" captures something meaningfully urgent in the brutal day-to-day of tough love amid a world of tougher indifference.
Fresh: [A] handsomely shot, sometimes harrowing doc.
Fresh: Almost Holy has the feel of following an embedded journalist on one of those raw, ground-level views of a problem you'd never considered before but now, by virtue of good reporting, feels urgent and alive.
Most beautifully shot doc I've ever seen
Excellent film! Great soundtrack and cinematography.
In a weird way, it's a movie about moral confusion featuring a protagonist that suffers from seemingly no confusion at all. It forces the viewer to ask themselves "do I agree with what Gennadiy is doing here?" as the credits are rolling.
A True Superhero
Almost Holy is superb. Steve Hoover sheds light on a true superhero whose mission is to clean up his city and give people a better life. The cinematography is stunning and supported by an equally powerful soundtrack. This a film with style and substance.
Once of the more beautiful documentries I have seen for such a sad topic.
