Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Filmmaker Cameron Crowe can't catch a break with Aloha, a Hawaii-set romcom that is a handful of stories struggling for a unifying tone, but is nowhere near as toxic as its advance buzz.
Rotten: Cameron Crowe writes movies like he's calling us in eighth grade with his heart on fire.
Rotten: Even if this were well made in a technical sense, it would still be a weird heap of patriotism, astronomy, and Hawaiian folklore, piled atop a pat and predictable love story.
Rotten: The whole story is a tangled mess. Aloha sees itself as a quirky, funny, and sad, but loudly announces when it's trying to be those things.
Just saw this at the movies. Wasn't planning on seeing this movie, but very very glad I did. Thinking of buying it on iTunes. Feel good and beautiful scenery. Loved it!
Love Cameron Crowe
As is almost always the case with Cameron Crowe, the magic of this movie can be found in two places. First of all, in the small moments that you may not notice the first time you watch it; in looks exchanged between two friends, or in a passing joke. If you try to find the action in the actual plot of the movie, you'll be underwhelmed; get to know the characters if you want to be enthralled.
And secondly, the magic of any Cameron Crowe movie is found in the soundtrack. His soundtracks are like expertly-cruated mix tapes, and this one in particular is a great summer mix.
