Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: [American Assassin] plays like "The Bourne Identity for Dummies," a bland wannabe with a threadbare plot that -- the ample violence notwithstanding -- mostly misses the mark.
Rotten: Sorry, but no sale.
Rotten: American Assassin is as generic an espionage thriller as you're likely to find.
Rotten: "American Assassin" is bogged down by its contrived, empty-headed script (credited to four screenwriters and less than the sum of its parts) and its macho chest beating.
Absolutely terrible acting. The story line could've made a great movie, but Michael Keaton as a retired Navy Seal, with bad acting? Not buying it. A boy band look-a-like as an aggressive maverick with an appetite for revenge, with terrible acting once again? Not buying it.
A re-created massacre scene from the Punisher opens the show as the proverbial clueless female from Jason 34 is helplessly murdered as she desperately calls for her love to save her. Thus, Mr. Wannabe Boy Band's plot for revenge begins.
Just follow Batman, Robin, Jason Bourne and Catwoman's love child (boy band) with ADHD from there and that's how the story goes. During one scene, Mr. Lovechild is apparently wounded but it's difficult to tell whether he has a gunshot wound or if he has some sort of handicap.
The remaining details are fuzzy for me from that point because I just wanted to leave for the rest of the movie, but I endured it.
I don't typically write reviews but I wish I had those two hours back, so hopefully this might spare you the same. I wouldn't rent this show for free.
It's rare that a film so perfectly reflects the source novel like this one does. Right down to the smallest detail (note the lacrosse stick in Mitch's apartment), American Assassin hits every note. The writing and directing is some of the best out there, and the acting is spot on. I've been a Vince Flynn fan since Term Limits, and I've read every one of his (and then Kyle Mills) books. I'm so glad they gave the big screen treatment such proper care. Here's to many sequels!
Best movie I have seen in a while
I absolutely loved american assassin, the acting was amazing and it kept me on the same edge of my seat.
