About the Movie

From HBO Films comes this intimate drama about the complicated relationship between a 30-something social worker and the bright but troubled teenager she tries to help. Rachel Griffiths (Golden Globe winner for HBO's 'Six Feet Under') stars as a pregnant New York City counselor named Nicole who takes in inner-city teen Angel (Jonan Everett) after he is thrown out by his intractable father (David Zayas of HBO's 'Oz')--who wants his son to join the military. The experience comes to a head when Angel's hostilities surface in unexpected ways, compromising his future while underscoring Nicole’s own personal frustrations. Directed by Jim McKay, this compelling tale looks at how the professional boundary between caregivers and those they try to help can be morally difficult to determine. Screenplay by Jim McKay and Hannah Weyer.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Immensely engrossing. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Despite some neatly understated yet complex performances by Griffiths and newcomer Everett, the film has a tendency to meander from scene to scene without ever sufficiently engaging the viewer. – Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010
