Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mike Leigh's films are one of a kind.
Fresh: Leigh has found yet another way to express certain incompatibilities of class by framing them as emotional conflicts.
Fresh: See it at your own risk -- but don't miss it.
Fresh: Only Leigh could find so much pathos in ripe, rounded happiness...
Good things come in small packages
I have to laugh when other reviewers say they kept waiting for something to happen. THIS IS A MIKE LEIGH movie!! It's already happening !!! And if you are expecting everything to come to a tidy conclusion then maybe you need to switch directors. The joy of any of Mike Leighs work is the journey, not the destination.
Why did I watch this? the characters are massively cliched, especially the married couple who are cast as having such a perfect little marriage and life in the midst of their maladjusted friends. Character development is nil, dialogue is canned, the film moves at a frustratingly slow pace and the hoped for conflict/resolution never emerges. No doubt some will enjoy this effort, though others, encouraged by the sensational reviews posted here, will be left quite disappointed and wondering why anyone would spend two hours of their lives watching this misguided attempt at profundity.
Skip it. Trust.
Average Year - Was That It??
Yes, production value is high. The director did a fine job. The movie flows together smoothly. However, it really is just a story about the struggling life of everyday, average people. Even though there is decent character development, the film lacks a plot. The story just rambles on and on. The movie abruptly ends with no questions answered, and no wrap up. It's as if the producers ran out of money and said, "Okay, let's just end it here." There are better "reality" dramas out there, for sure.
