About the Movie

For Shirin, being part of a perfect Persian family isn’t easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesn’t know she’s bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine, can’t understand why she doesn’t tell them. Even the six-year-old boys in her moviemaking class are too ADD to focus on her for more than a second. Following a family announcement of her brother’s betrothal to a parentally approved Iranian prize catch, Shirin embarks on a private rebellion involving a series of pansexual escapades, while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: For all its disorganization and lack of an ending or even a sense of direction, "Appropriate Behavior" is alive. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jan 15, 2015

Fresh: Akhavan's confidently off-kilter approach to basic human interaction makes for an authentically ironic, adorably wistful, smartly observed ride. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jan 17, 2015

Fresh: If this is a familiar kind of film with a familiar setting and a familiar resolution, that intense delicacy makes it clear that its creator is an unusual talent. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jan 13, 2015

Fresh: Forget its generic title, its breakup setup, and its indie-standard Brooklyn walk-and-talks: Writer/director Desiree Akhavan's Appropriate Behavior is the freshest comedy of life and love in the city since Obvious Child. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Jan 13, 2015

Customer Reviews

Hilarious, unique, heartfelt.

I enjoyed this movie from the first moment til the last drop. I didn’t want it to end. How completely rare to see a fully realized, well-made, well-acted, witty queer film. I can’t wait to see what she does next. Her wry sense of humor was infectious. I really felt for her character and saw myself in her.

Awesome movie about a Queer WOC

This movie actually knows what it’s doing and what it’s talking about, it’s so refreshing. Too often movies with non straight ladies are written and directed by straight men for straight men, this one isn’t. The world need more movies like this

Unique and funny!

Not your run-of-the-mill typical movie, which makes this great! Loved it. Highly recommend!
