About the Movie

Kind-hearted, fun-loving, and utterly without purpose, Arthur spends every day in the heedless pursuit of amusement. But when his unpredictable public image threatens the staid reputation of the family foundation, Bach Worldwide, he is given an ultimatum: marry the beautiful but decidedly unlovable Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner), an ambitious corporate exec who can keep him in line, or say goodbye to his billion-dollar inheritance and the only way of life he knows. It's a deal Arthur would be inclined to take...if he hadn't just fallen for Naomi (Greta Gerwig), a New York City tour guide who shares his idealism and spontaneity. All he needs to do is stand up for what he wants. But at what cost? With some unconventional help from Hobson (Helen Mirren)--the one person who always believed he could do anything--Arthur will take the most expensive risk of his life and learn what it means to become a man.

Rotten: A pitiable remake of the sloshed "classic" from 1981. – David Denby, New Yorker, Apr 25, 2011

Rotten: If there's anything worse than a watered-down, big-screen sitcom, it's a watered-down, big-screen sitcom that gets all socially responsible on us at the end – Scott Foundas, Film Comment Magazine, Jun 20, 2013

Rotten: In this rehash of the 1981 smash - which featured fellow English comic Dudley Moore in the title role - Brand looks and sounds comparatively bland. – Ed Gibbs, The Sun Herald, Dec 18, 2011

Rotten: The original Arthur was a pretty mirthless affair, but the crude remake starring Russell Brand is infinitely worse... – Philip French, Guardian, Apr 23, 2011

Not as Fun as Expected

Russel Brand as Arthur was never a bad idea. In fact, Brand does capture the spirit Dudley Moore's classic character. The flaw that surrounds this movie though, is how much of a retread it really is. Other than changing Hobson into a female butler, nothing about the plot was drastically retooled. I give the movie's dramatic performances some credit, you were able to feel for Arthur and I think Brand could do some promising serious roles in the future. The funny stuff was virtually all seen in the trailer, and even the jokes that you thought would build to a great payoff, usually end without one. Arthur is not the unbelievable disaster that some critics have made it out to be, its just a nice little movie.

This movie wasn't that good! Hardly that funny, it's more serious that funny

Arthur

Russell and Brand and Helen Mirren reunite from the confusing film "The Tempest" in "Arthur," the remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore film. The film also stars a great cast of Greta Gerwig ("No Strings Attached"), Luiz Guzman, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Garner. From director Jason Winer ("Modern Family") and Warner Bros. Pictures, comes a remake that is both funny and sad at times. Let us see who wins it all, money or love?
Arthur (Brand) is an alcoholic billionaire who recently got in trouble with the law with his chauffeur (Guzman) and the Batmobile. His mother (Geraldine James) and her rotten to the core assistant Susan (Garner) devise a plan to teach him a lesson, by having him marry Susan in order to keep the fortune. Arthur is forced to accept the marriage, however he reconsiders when he falls for an illegal tour guide named Naomi (Gerwig). Thus, Arthur must learn how to get a job, to take care of his ill nanny (Mirren), and a valuable lesson that love and money do not mix.
"Arthur" is a funny remake, because Russell Brand did a smart job portraying the title character. The film was not "Get Him to the Greek" nor "Hop" funny, but at least Brand cracked me up. He had funny lines, and fits the character well. Jennifer Garner was both sexy and irritating at the same time, while Helen Mirren was once again a smart actress. Even though, it could of lad less sad moments, I still enjoyed it. With great songs by Daniel Merriweather and Fitz and the Tantrums, "Arthur's" money is growing on three and a half smiley faces.
