About the Movie

Awkward Ed Wallis (Nat Wolff) moves to a new town with his single mom (Sarah Silverman) and needs help fitting in. Brainier than his peers, Ed figures playing high school football might be good way to make more friends, but his only new friend Eloise (Emma Roberts) thinks it's odd. When Ed gets an assignment to write an essay about someone from an older generation, he introduces himself to his neighbor Ashby Holt (Mickey Rourke) and the two embark on an unlikely, immediate friendship. Ashby's style of tough love takes some getting used to but, overtime, Ed learns a lot from Ashby including how to be courageous.which is very much needed when he learns his new best friend is a former CIA assassin.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It's a comedy afraid of being too funny lest its macho sentimentality seem even more ridiculous than it is, and a drama afraid of appearing too serious lest you dismiss it as hogwash. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 25, 2015

Rotten: Folks buying a ticket to Ashby hoping to see a film about the late-great director of Being There and Harold and Maude are about to be sorely disappointed. So is everyone else. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 25, 2015

Fresh: A winning film about reconciling one's self-image with reality. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Sep 22, 2015

Fresh: It's Wolff and Rourke who have to carry the load, and for the most part they do. – Pete Vonder Haar, Village Voice, Sep 22, 2015

A touching comedy

This movie is quite enjoyable, offering both a sensitive social and personal critic on todays relationships. The personae of Mickey Rourke playing a substitute father figure trying to forgive himself is a very interesting contrast to Nat Wolff’s bright young but undermined character.

Coming of a hitman??

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, had a great peformance from Micky and while it could have had a better story it plucked the correct amount of heart strings for the coming of age flick it is most definitely shooting for. The chemistry worked well between rourke and the kid, and was convincing. They both grew a little in their lives. This hitman/coming of age genre shouldn't work but I was engaged throughout and had fun with it.

Good movie, Simple

Fun and entertaining movie.
