Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the story...of the moment in America when myth was murdered by mere celebrity and we were left, perhaps forever, with only the latter's meager consolations. – Christopher Orr, The New Republic, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Moseying along for 160 minutes, this revisionist western by writer-director Andrew Dominik makes a wan attempt to present the Jesse James legend as the dawn of celebrity culture in America. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Awesome splendor and a striking essay on celebrity reward those who brave the 2 1/2-hour run time. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's a view of the West beyond the myth that's worth enduring, if not relishing. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Good movie! But why can't I buy it?

Really good movie. Superb cinematography and equally good acting. Some people said it was long, but I don't think so. I looked it up later, and saw that it's very historically acurate, too. Definately worth the money!

"new wave" western. be patient

This is not your typical western. Many have compared it to a Shakespeare play. It is true that it moves at its own pace. It takes time unfolding the story but I found it extremely enjoyable. Watch it with an open mind.

This movie really surprised me!

I remember when the first teaser trailer of this movie first hit theaters. I was fairly excited about seeing Brad Pitt's portray of Jesse James. However, It kept getting pushed back and back, until one day I was thinking to myself whatever happened to that movie? I searched it on the internet to see that it got a limited release and it was releasing on DVD soon. I waited until it did, and went to rental place in town and they said well for some reason we don't carry that title. I was thinking to myself is this movie that bad? I finally one night saw it on here so I rented it thinking what the hell I am bored and having nothing to lose. When I started to watch the film it was great on how it unfolded every movie in my recent memory of Jesse James makes him out to be some great American hero, this movie however captures more of the true portrayal of him. I found it interesting how Casey Affleck was a supporting actor when at times it seemed in the movie that he was the main character of the story. You really got a sense of how Jesse was the scum of the earth, and you felt the tragedy of the character of Robert Ford. The title of the movie is so interesting because I feel now that the people who made this movie do not think Robert Ford was a coward but that is just the label he gotten through history, this is a film you should try!
