Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Adapting Sam Hart and Antony Johnston's graphic novel The Coldest City, Kurt Johnstad has written a smart exploitation thriller.
Rotten: It's great to a female-led action film but Atomic Blonde is a few notches below John Wick.
Fresh: After being the only interesting thing in Mad Max: Fury Road and giving the Fast & Furious crew a run for their money in F8 Charlize Theron here consolidates her position as cinema's most dangerous action movie female.
Fresh: What Theron sells superbly, as she did in Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, is, simply, ferocity.
(7/10) ATOMIC BLONDE is fun and highly enjoyable, but mostly due to the strong performances from Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and whoever was in charge of the stunts. The flashy aesthetic didn't win me over till about halfway through the movie, in fact, the movie itself didn't really win me over until about halfway through. The spray paint on text was a bit much, especially when titling the locations, and the soundtrack is only enjoyable within the film unlike Baby Driver. I found myself not caring about too many characters, because many felt underdeveloped and just thrown in. "Atomic Blonde", she even lacked a character arc, no one actually changed by the end of the film, but I guess that's not what it's about. It's about great action and making people go "oh!" at every hit, and that happens to be something this film does fantastic at. The action is so good that I don't really care what's going on in the film, not that I can even understand what's going on because the story is poorly told, but the action is so well done that that is all they needed to get right. This film is good, but no thanks to anyone else except for the actors, the stunt director, and I forgot to mention the cinematographer; but that might be because the editor distracted me from his gorgeous shots (I'm sure you'll see what I mean).
Gives John Wick a run for his money.
I didn't watch this movie with very high expectations. The trailer was cool but looked like the movie could possibly fall on the silly side. I'm glad I ended up being happily surprised and thoroughly entertained. I'm going to see the movie again for a second time today with a friend who hasn't seen it yet.
