Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: August Rush will not be for everyone, but it works if you surrender to its lilting and unabashedly sentimental tale of evocative music and visual poetry. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Nov 23, 2007

Rotten: August Rush feels like the cinematic equivalent of being stuffed with fruitcake and doused with a gallon of egg nog. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: [An] inane musical melodrama. – Pam Grady, San Francisco Chronicle, Nov 24, 2007

Rotten: It would be nice to say this predictable fantasy has such a big heart, we can forgive its excesses. But director Kirsten Sheridan overplays nearly every already-corny scene. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jul 7, 2010

I LOVE this movie

This move was touching, and was just an overall wow movie. I've never been that amazed at the end of a film. After seeing this in theaters, i sat in my seat until the credits were through. The music of this movie is really neat. There are many classical composers and then some contemporary thrown in. I really loved this film but Apple needs to get rid of the stupid rental things. People want to buy there movies not just have them for 3 days. Seriously guys, not a good choice on your part. Movie gets 5 stars, Apple gets 1.

The most moving film I have ever seen....

This movie brings back a lot of things I have forgotten as an adult. I have heard from many musicians who say they hear music in everything (my self included, I used to be a concert Cellist), something I forgot years ago. The inspiring tale of August Rush may well invoke things within you that you have forgotten from your childhood. I'm blown away with how well the writers conveyed the value of music in healing as well as inspiration. August reminds quite a bit of myself as a child. If you're a strings player though, don't pick on Keri Russel. I think it's pretty funny that in every film about a Cellist, the "Cellist" doesn't vibrato when the music does! Also notable, the composers beautifully took advantage of many forms of music, this isn't just a movie that expected to use music as a backdrop, it was immersed in it.

The Best Movie Ever

August Rush is hands down the best movie I have ever seen and at 37, I've seen a lot of them. The acting, plot, sub plots, music, everything - Absolutely Phenominal! Finally a movie that isn't about all the usual suspects of sex, violence, vulgarity, greed, and materialism. This movie speaks directly to the heart and soul; speaking to the positive human characteristics of love, endurance, and hope. If you watch it and don't cry or at least feel moved to do something more with life than acquire junk - you can't possibly by human. WOW!
