Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The spectacular fire sequences, which must have been hellish to film, are powerfully enveloping on screen, thanks especially to the eerie effect of the title. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Backdraft has some of the raw filmmaking excitement that has been missing from Howard's recent work. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Visually, pic often is exhilarating, but it's shapeless and dragged down by corny, melodramatic characters and situations. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: [The scenes involving fire] are so good they make me recommend the movie anyway, despite its brain-damaged screenplay. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fiction, but still a great film

Although this movie is a little too hollywood, with things that we don't do and things that fire doesn't do, it is still a great story. There really hasn't been a firefighting film made like it and has a great cast to accompany the story. It is a drama that is like no other and keeps you interested all the way to the end. Robert De Niro even though he is only in a supporting roll, plays a great part of the movie. I think it is one of his best parts and too bad he didn't have a few more scenes. I always recommend this movie with a side note to ask a firefighter after what is real and what is not. Enjoy
