Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [A] modest, nimble and, um, winning comedy from Andrew Disney, which acknowledges sports-movie conventions even as it exploits them. – Andy Webster, New York Times, Jun 19, 2015

Rotten: There's some chuckleworthy meta-commentary about the absurdity of sports movies, but Balls Out feels more like a long sketch than a feature. – Kyle Anderson, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 18, 2015

Fresh: Though it's far less fratty than its bare-bones marketing suggests, it has a retrograde campus-comedy vibe, right down to the Orion Pictures logo that resurfaces in front of the movie. – Jesse Hassenger, AV Club, Dec 9, 2015

Fresh: A sports movie actually attuned to the knowledge that victory in an inconsequential game bears no meaning. – Nick Prigge, Slant Magazine, Jun 15, 2015

Instant Cult Classic

I saw this film at Tribeca Film Festival in 2014 and I’ve been so excited to see it again ever since. It’s got low-brow to super-intellectual humor and a throwback vibe that won’t stop. SNL might not have made it, but the film benefits heavily from some up and comers on the show and shooting stars. An absolute must see.

Kate McKinnon steals the show

very very very funny movie. don’t let the title and poster mislead you. Kate McKinnon (from SNL) steals the show alongside her SNL co-stars Beck Bennett (a break-out) and jay Pharoah. Comedy nerds will love it!

So funny

If you like comedies like Wet Hot American Summer and Walk Hard, you are sure to love this. So, so funny!
