Barbarosa is a western starring the unlikely screen team of Willie Nelson and Gary Busey. Nelson is an outlaw, Busey his country-bumpkin buddy. They decide to ride together, since both are on the run from separate family feuds. Directed by Australian filmmaker Fred Schepisi, the screenplay for Barbarosa was written by William D. Wittliff who would later gain acclaim for his adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove.
Beware: this is a heavily flawed print of the film...
The one-star rating is for the shabby print, not the movie itself, which I love. In addition to the clipped scenes mentioned by a previous reviewer (I count five), there are two reels - TWENTY MINUTES of the film - that are flopped. Willie Nelson's scar on his cheek moves from left to right. Gary Busey suddenly becomes left-handed. It starts around 55:13. It's a shame that this is the only letterboxed print available to the public... the film looks gorgeous widescreen. I just wish somebody hadn't mangled it so badly.
Great movie, but itunes has an edited version that cut some good lines out....
My rating is not for the movie itself. This is one of my favorite Willie Nelson movies. That is, when it's uncut. iTunes needlessly cut a lot of great lines out of this copy. If I could get my money back, I would; then I'd go find an uncut version. iTunes should at least let buyers know that this version of Barbarosa is cut. But since they aren't, I am! If I'm going to spend my money on a movie, I should at least know what I'm buying. SO BUYER BEWARE!!!
