About the Movie

Inspired by the real life of singer/songwriter Alyssa Robbins, Becks follows a musician who moves back to her childhood home in St. Louis after a crushing breakup with her longtime girlfriend. While performing for tips at a local tavern and struggling to reconnect with her ultra-Catholic mother, she strikes up a unique friendship with the wife of an old nemesis. Becks begins to discover her musical voice as she performs deeply personal songs about her ex and the loss of their relationship. Driven by an original score, the film’s musical numbers bring a unique new voice to the American musical movie.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The movie exemplifies how small judgments in pace, performance and soundtrack can transcend modest trappings. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, Feb 8, 2018

Fresh: "Becks" is the kind of modest, non-earthshaking indie enterprise that ends up being so satisfying mostly because it's about a character type familiar from real life but all too under-represented at the movies. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Jun 29, 2017

Fresh: Like its heroine, "Becks" is unsure and all over the place, lacking a central focus. But like Becks herself, its messiness ultimately draws us in and keeps us watching. – Kimber Myers, Los Angeles Times, Feb 8, 2018

Fresh: Certainly this appealing character-driven musical deserves to find an audience. – Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 20, 2017

Perfectly balanced film with amazing Music

Not many films can balance comedy and drama quite as perfectly as BECKS while also filled with amazing songs.

Lena Hall and Christine Lahti’s mother daughter relationship was pitch perfect in relaying the conflict between a gay musician and an ex-nun mother without being stereotypically obvious. While Mena Suvari’s performance as a suburban wife struggling with the boredom of a successful American life is honest and provides a sweet vulnerability.

Add in comic relief from Dan Fogler and incredible heartfelt songs by Alyssa Robbins and you have a film that is emotionally resonant, entertaining and surprisingly funny.

One of the best films I’ve seen this year! If not ever...

Fun Loving Musical LGBTQ Film

Becks is a personal growth story that has you rooting for her and her possible happy ending the entire time. The original songs throughout the film create a nice bridge between scenes while also being entertaining. There is never a lull and when things slow down humor comes in in full force. It is a heartwarming LGBTQ film that everyone needs to see.

Excellent independent film

Best little movie I've seen in a while... Well crafted, strong performances, and good music. A must see.
