It's the untold romance that inspired the novels of one of the worlds most celebrated authors. Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Hathaway never makes us think the woman could write anything more complex than a diet book.
Fresh: Clearly embraces the spirit of the beloved novelist.
Rotten: The movie goes down easy, but there's a thin line here: is this an homage or a parasite?
Rotten: Becoming Jane becomes a rather ordinary, though sporadically entertaining, game of dress-up.
And the chemistry between the 2 romantic leads is wonderful. It's so sad that their love couldn't go further and with this, I can see why Jane Austen wrote the stories she did. There's something about herself in all her heroines. Anne Hathaway did a great job, she was definitely very believable as Jane.
And, I just LOVE James McAvoy, it's not easy to portray both intensity and casualness at the same time, but he does it with beautiful nuance and loads of charm. I could go on. :P
This movie is amazing
I remember when I first watched it in 2009, it made me cry. I absolutely adore Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy in this movie, they play their roles amazingly. Given the time in which the story was set in, it was carried out beautifully and also brought to life Jane Austen. It's one of my favorite movies and I've watched it countless of times, that it's become a classic for me. Jane Austen doesn't get better than this, it makes you excited to read her works and to see the films out there representing those literary pieces of art. It's simply amazing.
