About the Movie

Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro, Paul Dano and Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore give powerhouse performances in this compelling exploration of the unbreakable yet fragile bonds between parent and child, written and directed by Paul Weitz (About a Boy). Nick Flynn (Dano) is a young writer seeking to define himself. His father Jonathan (De Niro), however, scrapes through life on his own terms and has not seen his son in 18 years. Taking a job at a homeless shelter, Nick finds purpose in his own life and work until one night Jonathan arrives seeking a bed. To give the two of them a shot at a real future, Nick wrestles with the notion of reaching out to his dad in this “undeniably powerful” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) adaptation of Nick Flynn’s award-winning memoir Another Bull$%!* Night in Suck City.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There is honest feeling, genuine humanity and real intelligence in this movie, but there is also a sense of caution, of indecisiveness, that undermines its potential power. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Mar 1, 2012

Rotten: Weitz...began adapting Flynn's book for the screen eight years ago. It's too bad that he didn't figure out in the ensuing years that it was not worth his efforts. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Mar 1, 2012

Fresh: It's easy to imagine Being Flynn's story turning precious in the wrong hands, but Weitz and his cast spin it just right - as a narrative that is both emotionally real, and just writerly enough to suit its leading men. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Mar 2, 2012

Rotten: A handful of acting moments aside, "Being Flynn" is a drama without much in the way of rewards. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Mar 8, 2012

Not fantastic

This was a waste of Robert DiNiro's talents. How can you have him for a movie and not make something half decent? Very disappointed.

Seems if Robert De Niro isn't playing some type of gangster; his
movie ratings will be low. He is excellent at showing the flaws; and;
the fragile side of individuals; probably too close to home for most of us.
Excellent actor; not afraid or intimidated to break out of the stereo
type gangster; to explore the more humane side of life.

Great Flick!

Loved every minute of it! Keep these kinds of Pro-Military films coming! I'm so tired of the typical tripe about a corrupt US official, or evil corporation. This is just good old fashioned movie about sacrifice. God & Country! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
