About the Movie
One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation, never before officially released in the U.S., BELLADONNA OF SADNESS unfolds as a series of spectacular still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together. An innocent young woman, Jeanne is violently raped by the local lord on her wedding night. To take revenge, she makes a pact with the Devil who transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: "Belladonna of Sadness" is undoubtedly a landmark of animated film, and arguably a masterpiece. But it's a very disquieting one.
Rotten: The paintings simply aren't strong enough to hold the audience's attention and carry the story.
Fresh: It's a classic tale of temptation and tragedy, of innocence lost and evil triumphant.
Fresh: Perhaps too ambitious for its own good (or at least its budget), the film is impossible to dismiss, even if it exhausts its reserve of ideas.
La Belle Dame Sans Merci
This is a movie that should stand tall among other psychedlic 1970's animations, like " Fantastic Planet," and "Yellow Submarine." It only needs to find its audience and thanks to this restoration it should. The film really shines; the attention to detail by the restoration team is superb.
P.S. the film's soundtrack is available on iTunes if you search for the films composer: Masahiko Sato
