About the Movie

One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation, never before officially released in the U.S., BELLADONNA OF SADNESS unfolds as a series of spectacular still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together. An innocent young woman, Jeanne is violently raped by the local lord on her wedding night. To take revenge, she makes a pact with the Devil who transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Belladonna of Sadness" is undoubtedly a landmark of animated film, and arguably a masterpiece. But it's a very disquieting one. – Glenn Kenny, New York Times, May 5, 2016

Fresh: The artwork is achingly delicate, but there's nothing subtle about Belladonna of Sadness. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Mar 1, 2018

Fresh: Carefully constructed and a little sloppy, alluring and disturbing, this gem deserves a trigger warning, but also a chance. – Violet Lucca, Film Comment Magazine, Mar 1, 2018

Fresh: Still, there's an undeniable genius at work here, strong enough to survive the psychedelic sleaze that's been baked into every frame. – David Ehrlich, indieWire, Mar 1, 2018

La Belle Dame Sans Merci

This is a movie that should stand tall among other psychedlic 1970's animations, like " Fantastic Planet," and "Yellow Submarine." It only needs to find its audience and thanks to this restoration it should. The film really shines; the attention to detail by the restoration team is superb.

P.S. the film's soundtrack is available on iTunes if you search for the films composer: Masahiko Sato
