About the Movie

Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, this powerful film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the mixed-race daughter of a British Navy officer raised by her wealthy great-uncle (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). Although racism prevents her from enjoying the full advantages of her upbringing, Belle’s love for an idealistic young man sparks change that may impact generations to come.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Charming and stirring. – David Denby, New Yorker, Sep 22, 2014

Fresh: Luminous British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw brings a hope and intelligent hunger to Dido. She's loved by her family enough to have a sense of belonging but hemmed in by broader cultural realities to experience moments of unease. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, May 16, 2014

Fresh: The film simply looks lovely, never moreso than when Mbatha-Raw is on screen. – Tom Long, Detroit News, May 16, 2014

Rotten: It's an inert, pompous, un-cinematic piece of cinema. – Nigel Andrews, Financial Times, Jun 12, 2014

Essential viewing for period drama fans

“Belle" stood up well in comparison to other well-reviewed period drama/romance films like Bright Star or Elizabeth. In addition to beautiful costumes, history, family drama and romance, “Belle” included much-needed discussion of the fact that racial minorities did in fact exist pre-1970. It’s a shame that “Belle" did not get a wider release.

So Beautiful

One of the most beautiful movies I've seen. A story of kindness and compassion in a time where there was almost none. Loved it.

Not only was the film beautifully acted and perfectly set, but it did not fail to dig deep. Every character had a dilemma. The resolution of each dilemma was neatly. It’s worth noting that this was the first film I’ve seen where white people of various classes stood against racism and racist behavior from other whites. I was very moved.
