About the Movie
In a startling synthesis of cinema and theatre, filmmaker Larry Brand joins acclaimed actor Stephen Lang on a journey through the desperate conflicts of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Changing character with quicksilver virtuosity, Lang reaches deep into reservoirs of emotion and pain, fortitude and courage, humility and joy, embodying the personae of eight warriors, each a Medal of Honor recipient with a remarkable story to tell. With equal skill, director Brand employs a wide cinematic arsenal to frame, enhance, and illuminate these stories. The result is a unique melding of two art forms, theatre and cinema, based on journalist Larry Smith's best selling war chronicle, Beyond Glory.
Great Movie and Play
My mother and I saw the play when it came to Memphis. It was absolutely amazing. There were also quite a few veterans, including a Pearl Harbor survivor, in the audience. All of the emotion that Mr. Lang displayed made me think that I was actually looking and listening to the veterans themselves tell their stories.
I saw Mr. Lang's performance in Houston in 2016. It's an amazing performance, as he gets into each of the different personalities whose stories he tells--of men who were awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in combat. Some are well known, like Jim Stockdale and Daniel Inouye. Others are less known. Some are hilarious, all are poignant. To fully experience it, you need to be there in person, a few feet from Lang. But in the film version, he does something unique. He doesn't just reenact or record the play. But he tells you the story of it. And you see, sometimes all at once, his different performances for different audiences around the globe. He's loved by service members and veterans around the world. This will preserve his amazing performance for generations.
Fortunately the hub and I got to see a live performance of Beyond Glory in the fall of 2013. What an amazing talent - Mr. Lang kept the entire audience spellbound from beginning to end. We became instant fans and started following his work. This documentary is a must have!
