Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This absorbing account of the first recorded summit of the world's highest mountain is a rare documentary for which re-enactments make complete sense. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, Jul 3, 2014

Rotten: Like a mountaineer grappling on sheet ice, the film's focus on performance can result in a loss of footing. – Diana Clarke, Village Voice, Jul 2, 2014

Fresh: Recalled in the somewhat breathless History Channel-style voice-overs of the participants and their families, the journey was a triumph of guts, perseverance, endurance, ingenuity and teamwork. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Jul 3, 2014

Fresh: Beyond The Edge brilliantly blends archival footage and reconstructions provide an engrossing, if sometimes dry, retelling of a breathtaking achievement. – John Noonan, FILMINK (Australia), Oct 16, 2014

Everest summit

This is a good and accurate recreation of the first to reach the summit of Everest, a combination of original footage, new-cgi, original photography, and very close recreation of Tenzing and Ed. Worth watching, not much drama and real historic event.

As close to the real climb as you'll ever get

This was a very interesting documentary. Very we'll made. It really gave a deep sense of the long and arduous struggle it was to take Everest for the first time. Really great imagery and effects give a strong sense that you are there struggling alongside the original team - not knowing if what you're trying to do is really even possible. For those who fantasize about the extraordinary adventure you'll probably never really take, this is as good as it gets.

PIONEERS

ARE THE MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE. THIS IS A GREAT STORY ABOUT A DREAM AND A SUCCESSFUL UNDERTAKING OF THE IMPROBABLE BY A GROUP OF MEN, AND IN THE END, TWO BECAME LEGENDS. WELL TOLD IN EVERY WAY.
